Where did you obtain your education?

My background was one of modest means. My parents were older, depression-era children. My father only completed 9th grade before having to work to support his family. Mother, though very intelligent, didn't proceed to college after high school due primarily to expectations in the rural South at that time and my father's will.

I elected to build a career in creative arts and advertising. My parents, though supportive, could not conceive a career path. I excelled and graduated 3rd in my class, intending to further my education. Then, at a public portfolio show, I was offered a job on the spot. Understand, I wasn't looking for employment and didn't realize I was undergoing an interview. The position was with a progressive real estate development firm and offered a vast learning opportunity, significant responsibilities, and room for growth. Under extreme pressure from my father, now understanding his limited perspective, I elected to leave school early and "go pro." Intending to go back to school at a later date.

The job proved to be an excellent environment for personal and professional growth. Surrounded by smart, dedicated, and hard-working professionals, I quickly expanded my role. I was designing brands, conceptualizing and creating a slew of weekly advertising, PR materials, and shooting photography. Operating a darkroom for a quick turn (before digital) and working closely with a film house cranking out production materials..

This lead to another huge opportunity. Targeted to join a national food service company from my hard-earned reputation, I was challenged was to develop an internal agency to produce both B2B and B2C marketing and advertising materials. Environmental graphics, film direction and production, event branding, design, and management followed. I again excelled.

From there, I entered the agency world. Each step I took required extreme dedication and commitment, including 60-70 hour work weeks. I found as technology changed, it was most efficient for me to study individual software applications, techniques, and tools to continue evolving my skills while fulfilling my job duties. Once a family was in the picture, and my financial responsibilities grew, the formula continued to work for me.

Then, years later, you look back with gratitude and appreciation at the wealth of knowledge and experience you have gained. And, the journey continues.

What’s the deal with pancakes?

Do you have to ask? They're simply delicious! Both alone and with seemingly endless toppings, adjuncts, and varieties. Buttermilk, bran, you name it. All offer a healthy breakfast. Or a yummy dinner.
